Deb Goodrich has written a fascinating biography of Charles Curtis, the first Native American to serve as Vice President of the United States.
Curtis was of Kaw, Osage and Potawatami descent. He overcame a variety of challenges to become a prominent Republican leader. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate before being selected by Herbert Hoover to be his running mate in the 1928 presidential election. He served as vice president from 1929 to 1933.
The book explores the unique position of Curtis as a Native American in American politics including his advocacy of Indigenous rights and assimilation policies. This is a detailed look at Curtis's career, struggles and legacy as an often overlooked, but significant historical figure.
